How to Better Assess Your Patients Nutrition Needs

Presented by: Ashley Koff, ND

MyPlate, BMI, lab, and genetic tests, oh my! While helpful, these tools don’t provide the integrative practitioner with the information needed to build a patient’s better nutrition plan. Today, we need better tools to get better outcomes.

Lifestyle Choices Chart Your Brains Destiny

Presented by: David Perlmutter, MD, FACN, ABIHM

It has been said that the two most important defining features of humans are the opposable thumb and our unparalleled cognitive abilities. But, as it relates to the latter, our ability to maintain high level cognitive functionality, especially later in life, is clearly under threat. Recognizing that there are indeed operant factors involved in this process takes the narrative to a place of identifying and hopefully subduing these factors with the goal of preserving brain health. This perspective stands in stark contrast to the standard Western medical model that focuses more on targeting the manifestations of the various mechanisms that are involved in disrupting brain function while virtually ignoring the mechanisms themselves.

This presentation will explore these fundamental mechanisms. Beyond reviewing correlative data relating insulin resistance, obesity, hyperglycemia, sedentarity, and other parameters with neurodegeneration, the presentation will provide the latest research indicating specifically how these variables ultimately translate into functional decline.

Finally, implementation of strategies founded on this knowledge base will be presented.

Ancient Wisdom, Nutrigenomics, and the Future of Healthcare

Presented by: Jeffrey Bland, PhD, FACN, FACB, CNS

Sometimes we can learn about the future by studying the past. With nutrition we might ask why certain diets, foods and nutrients have been associated in traditional cultures with long life and the absence of chronic disease. Is this all related to the genes of certain groups, or is it related to what they are eating and the lifestyles they have, or some combination of each? In this presentation, an exploration of this question will take the discussion to what we can learn from the past that will guide the development of personalized lifestyle healthcare in the future. The discussion will dive deep into the emerging understanding of the etiology of age-related chronic diseases and the biology of senescence. A takeaway from this presentation will be how better to understand and clinically apply the principles of nutrigenomics and nutritional epigenetics.

IFM Presents: Optimizing Cellular Energy Production: The Mito Food Plan

Presented by: Elizabeth Boham, MD, MS, RD

“Food first” is one of the key therapeutic approaches that functional medicine practitioners follow when supporting patients who have energy deficits. This session will review the Mito Food Plan and the importance of foods that contain key dietary oils, specific phytonutrients, and nutrients involved in mitochondrial function and cellular energy production. In addition, reduced caloric consumption has been found to enhance longevity and reduce the negative effects of advanced aging and will be discussed.

Revolutionizing Modern Health with Ancient Medicine

Presented by: Josh Axe, DNM, DC, CNS

One major point people make when rejecting the benefits of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) or Ayurveda is that there are few “gold-standard” studies that sufficiently prove their benefits. But for those of us who understand the practices, TCM and Ayurveda will never be effectively proven this way—they are based on an entirely different concept than nutrient isolations and randomized trials. By considering a person as a unique individual and using available resources to determine his or her needs, you can implement this system as a powerful tool in helping patients achieve total wellness by assigning them the specific herbs, therapies and dietary instructions that relate to their specific body and environment.

Nutrition Foundations for the Gut Microbiome

The gut microbiome has taken center stage in integrative medicine over the last several years. Microbes surround every tissue and cell inside and outside the body, and humans possess more microbial cells than they do human cells. The microbes contained on and within us are instrumental in literally every aspect of life and health, and contribute to processes such as immune defense, energy production, and metabolism.

In this comprehensive foundational guide, author Kellie Blake, RDN, LD, IFNCP, delves in to how  gut microbes affect health, what nutrition and lifestyle-related factors can help or harm the gut, and actionable steps for improving gut microbiome balance.
