Impacts of COVID-19 on Healthcare Practitioners Self-Care and Practice Recommendations

Studies showing the benefits of integrative therapies for COVID-19 provide an opportunity for integrative medicine to emerge as something that can’t be ignored, said Lise Alschuler, ND, FABNO, at the 2023 Integrative Healthcare Symposium in New York City.

It’s well-known that with the COVID-19 pandemic came a drastic increase in the level of burnout among healthcare providers. According to Alschuler, professor of clinical medicine at the University of Arizona, integrative and conventional practitioners alike reported significant increases in feelings of burnout as well as a decrease in overall wellbeing. In response a movement came about that encouraged healthcare practitioner wellness and self-care through lifestyle interventions.

The Emerging Science of Longevity

Most of what goes wrong as we age is a consequence of dysfunction, said Mark Hyman, MD, senior advisor for the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine and author of his most recent book, Young Forever: The Secrets to Living Your Longest, Healthiest Life, at the 2023 Integrative Healthcare Symposium in New York City.

The medical community needs to rethink what we’re doing and get away from whack-a-mole medicine when we’re just treating each disease separately, as if it were an independent entity like cancer or heart disease or diabetes, Hyman said.

A Multiomics Approach To Anxiety, Depression, Stress

Not everyone responds to the same interventions, said David Brady, ND, at the 2023 Integrative Healthcare symposium in New York City. Therefore, practitioners must look to personalizing the treatment of depression, anxiety, hypervigilance, and post-traumatic stress disorder using microbiomics, metabolomics, and genomics.

It’s only recently been established that the gut communicates with the brain through the gut-brain axis, Brady said. In Victorian times, a syphilis-causing microbe was responsible for filling mental asylums, according to an article in the Harvard Review of Psychiatry. In another instance, a New Jersey hospital psychiatrist linked bacteria on his patient’s teeth to their psychoses. Now, we have started to connect gut bacteria to mood disorders and depression.

How to Address The Growing Threat of Environmental Toxins

A simple way to start with environmental medicine is to test patients for blood lead levels, test for arsenic in urine, and finally, test for A gamma-glutamyl transferase (GTT) said Joseph Pizzorno, ND, at the 2023 Integrative Healthcare Symposium in New York City.

“Everyone can do these three test, they’re readily available in a laboratory, and the insights that you can reduce for patients can be quite remarkable,” said Pizzorno.

In a panel, Pizzorno, editor-in-chief of Integrative Medicine, A Clinician’s Journal, and his colleagues, Lyn Patrick, ND, and Anne Marie Fine, NMD, FAAEM, spoke of today’s most prominent environmental toxins, their relation to disease, and the importance of testing for them.
