We are teaching, offering, and learning an approach that can transform lives as well as relieve symptoms and prevent and heal disease… self-care is the heart of all healthcare and of our work. Today, seven out of 10 deaths are due to chronic illness with heart disease and cancer accounting for nearly half of all deaths. Additionally, 117 million Americans, or about half of all adults, have been diagnosed with one or more chronic illnesses; one in three adults and one in five children are obese; and it has been estimated that half of all Americans will be diabetic or pre-diabetic by 2020. Physicians, medical students, and other health professionals are increasingly stressed and dissatisfied, and more vulnerable to long-term chronic illness.
