People today are getting sicker, not healthier. We don't have a health-care system—we have a sick-care system. 133 million Americans have a chronic disease or condition. The annual cost of chronic pain is as high as $635 billion a year. That's more than the annual costs for cancer or heart disease.
Nearly 35 percent of the American population is overweight or obese. We're not the only ones; around the world, people are following our leadership by getting heavier. Currently, nearly 30 million Americans have type 2 diabetes; of those, about 8 million have it but don't know it yet. By 2030, researchers estimate that half of all Americans will have either prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.
It's time for a new view.
Many of us approach our health backward, focusing on the effects rather than the causes, and focusing on symptoms instead of systems. That's the way conventional medicine looks at treatment. In functional medicine and nutrition, we take a different approach. We look at the symptoms, but then we look upstream in the body's systems to see where the real cause of the problem lies.
