Clinical Trial: The intestines and brain are intimately connected via the gut-brain axis involving bi-directional neural, endocrine, and immune pathways. The role of the microbiota in this communications network has become increasingly evident serving as the basis for investigation into how our microbes affect mood and cognition. According to cognitive theories of depression, cognitive reactivity plays a central role in the development, maintenance, and recurrence of depression and is therefore considered a relevant target for interventions. In this randomized, controlled trial, supplementation with a targeted probiotic blend, Ecologic BARRIER, demonstrated reduced cognitive reactivity to sad mood as evidenced by diminished rumination and aggressive thoughts.
