The Whole Pregnancy Handbook by Joel Evans, MD
FROM THE LIBRARY JOURNAL: Coauthored by an obstetrician who came to holistic medicine several years into his career and a former editor of Parents.com (the web site for Parents magazine), this carefully planned addition to the pregnancy and childbearing literature also includes contributions from a doula, a nurse midwife, and a practitioner of craniosacral therapy and Reiki.
The book's perspective, although grounded in obstetrics and a safety-first approach, is informed by the holistic ethic of treating the whole person, including spiritual and emotional aspects. The idea is to allow the patient to lead the way in care and the natural wisdom of the body to lead the way through childbirth. Alternative treatments, such as herbal medicines and acupuncture, are considered. Oddly, home birth-which many people consider the most important "alternative" approach to mainstream childbirth practice-receives very brief and cautious treatment. Expectant mothers will enjoy this readable and reassuring book and can rely on it for accurate information. Recommended for public libraries.
