The Center for Life was inaugurated in 2007, as part of the expansion of the Section of Integrative Medicine (2001-2007) at the UNM Health Sciences Center. Integrative Medicine is healing-oriented medicine that takes account of the whole person (mind, body, and spirit), including all aspects of lifestyle. It emphasizes the therapeutic relationship and makes use of all appropriate therapies, both conventional and complementary. CFL receives support from the Department of Internal Medicine, the Health Sciences Center, the New Mexico State Legislature, and individual donors.

Arti Prasad MD, Professor of Internal Medicine, is CFL’s Founder and Executive Director. She is also the founding Section Chief of Integrative Medicine at UNM’s Health Science Center. This section was created to develop a comprehensive primary health care system based on an integrative approach that combines allopathic medical care with Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) using the best current evidence.
